Chapter VIII

Controlled Randomness

It’s only recently in the evolution of our species that food has become abundant. Like I said, the hunter-gatherers eating patterns didn’t follow breakfast-lunch-and-dinner but were completely random. Faunal mobility, seasonal change and drought all determined whether or not they would have to fast or feast. On top of that, there were sabertooth tigers whose dinner they could’ve easily become themselves.

Everything in the past was uncertain and unpredictable. Now it’s less so. We expect things to happen and our intuition is to stick to a certain regimen. We want to wake up every morning in our safe bed, go through our daily routines and go back to sleep the same way.
